December 1, 2021 — The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority (Authority) is pleased to announce that PJ Green, Inc. (PJ Green), located at 100 Whitesboro Street in Utica, has obtained the Authority’s RecycleOne Business Certification.
The RecycleOne Business Certification requires an on-site review from Authority staff to verify that specific solid waste management, recycling and energy reduction criteria have been achieved. If the criteria have been achieved, the Authority will issue the facility or business an official RecycleOne Business Certification.
This certification is free and available to all businesses located in Oneida and Herkimer counties. Accepted businesses will receive RecycleOne logos, posters, and relevant recycling information. RecycleOne Businesses are featured on the Authority’s website and will be eligible to win the Authority’s annual Recycling Champion Award.
PJ Green is a printing and mailing firm that has been family owned and operated since 1928. PJ Green started in a home garage and now operates out of a 125,000 square foot facility headquartered in Utica NY, along with 2 other NY locations in East Syracuse and Albany. As the company expanded, so did their service offerings; in addition to mailed publications, the company offers graphic design services, integrated marketing, printing and various promotional products to their customers. PJ Green is also certified as a Minority Women Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) in New York State.
PJ Green has prioritized recycling and waste reduction at their facilities through the following measures:
- Over 110 tons of paper recycled annually
- All pallets used to deliver/receive orders are reused or recycled
- Consistent recycling of over 700 pounds of cardboard per week
- Utilizing recycled paper for many printing jobs
- Installation of new digital inkjet printing presses that reuse all oil and remaining pigment in the press, eliminating hundreds of barrels of hazardous waste annually
“In our industry, you have to continue to evolve. Our waste reduction and recycling practices have to evolve as well – we want to keep getting better,” says Rick Green, Vice President/Co-Owner of PJ Green. “The printing presses we own actually recycle fluids back into the press… eliminating the waste other printers historically produce every day. We will continue to find solutions like this to expand our waste reduction and recycling efforts. Being part of the RecycleOne Business Program will give us opportunities and resources to help us do that,” he continued.
“PJ Green has always done a great job with recycling and reusing their products and materials. What they have done recently in terms of waste reduction is very impressive, and they should be commended for their efforts. The Authority is happy to see them join the RecycleOne Business team,” says Emily Albright, Authority Director of Recycling.
Recycling in the workplace not only helps the environment, but can be economically advantageous by allowing for lower costs for waste removal and possible revenues from recycling. The program also encourages social responsibility, positive public response and sustainability.
